Central District

Overall Evaluation

The Central District's Assets & Barriers

Out of the four topics that we have observed, three are considered assets while only one is considered a barrier. The three assets are Education, Transportation, and the Ecology of the neighborhood. The barrier is Gentrification.

Examining the interplay of these topics, we can see that the three assets work well together. For example, through Central District's preservation of its vast greenery it has managed to implement trails within its forestry that one can navigate through to reach Leschi and the waterfront, east of Central District. Central District's investment to the management, investment, and awareness of local ecology directly improves the well-being of the community, and will contribute to a more productive and sustainably motivated successive generation.

Community growth is accomplished by the open access to a wide variety of interdisciplinary opportunities. The strong and accessible educational system of the Central District gives community members the likelihood to succeed. Additionally, the asset of strong urban planning and a neighborhood layout suited for bike, foot, and public transportation makes all other assets of the neighborhood extremely accesible to any individual.

Notwithstanding, the historically black neighborhood is now being overridden by modern housing installments while white business owners override the black business that have had to shut down. The barrier of gentrification severely diminishes the neighborhoods accessibility to many minority groups and individuals of lower economic status.
